The Buarcos beach pool can accommodate 70 people at the same time and is open every day from 9.30am to 1pm and from 2.30pm to 7.30pm, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis, explains the local authority. Jumping into the pool or objects such as rackets, balls and floats (with the exception of those intended for babies and children) are not allowed, nor is eating, drinking or smoking on the premises.

It was Pedro Santana Lopes himself, mayor of Figueira da Foz, who announced the novelty, inspired by the pool installed in 2022 in Vila Nova de Gaia, with 25 by 20 meters and a maximum depth of one meter. The project, developed by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), represents an investment of around 100,000 euros per pool, financed by Turismo de Portugal, through gambling revenues from the Casino da Figueira.

In a statement, days before the pool opened to the public, the municipality guaranteed that “the services have proceeded to fill it and check all the necessary conditions for its operation, which is expected to start at the beginning of next week”, but adverse weather conditions prevented the process from being swift.

Known for its long stretches of sand, Figueira da Foz beach is bringing the sea closer to bathers with the installation of two swimming pools with seawater heated by solar panels. When the mayor announced the pools, he also said that this year the beach will have three electric “transfer” vehicles, similar to a golf cart, instead of one, which was debuted in 2022, to transport bathers along the beach, shortening distances.
