Figueira da Foz, which is strongly committed to surfing as a means of promoting tourism and economic development, will thus be equipped with a unique infrastructure at the national level and a pioneering one at the international level.
Cabedelo Beach will allow nighttime surfing and bodyboarding.
The municipality of Figueira da Foz, which is strongly committed to water sports as a means of promoting tourism and economic development, will thus acquire a unique infrastructure at the national level and a pioneering one at the international level.
The importance of this project fits “within the framework of a strategy to capitalize on the municipality's natural potential and positively differentiate its leisure facilities, among other things.”
The work in question is included in the overall intervention planned for Cabedelo (parish of S. Pedro), will begin in September 2019 and will last 12 months, at a cost of €2,640,000.
Seven lighting towers and 21 projectors are included in "an ambitious but rigorous electrification project that took into account the humidity and other conditions typical of a seaside beach, safeguarding the safety of people and animals and providing comfortable and appealing night lighting over a distance of 50 meters from the breakwater line,“ according to the Figueira da Foz municipality, for whom the lighting of Praia do Cabedelo ”will allow nighttime surfing and bodyboarding, capitalizing on the beautiful landscape and natural conditions favorable to these sports."
This project, which will soon begin to take shape with the start of electrification works on the beach, "is unique in the country and has few parallels in Europe or even worldwide, making it fundamental to the municipality's strategy of promoting Figueira da Foz as a destination for wave and beach sports, with distinctive characteristics, starting with its extensive urban beach and, soon, also with a beach with night lighting to attract surfers and bodyboarders from different countries," concludes the mayor.
The intervention is part of Figueira da Foz's Strategic Plan for Sustainable Urban Development (PEDUS), which aims to “carry out a significant set of works to provide the municipality with better conditions to increase, among other areas, its tourism development.”
