Its history:

- 1998

Inauguration of the Oceanarium

Motivated by the threats to the ocean, the founders of Expo'98 planned to build an aquarium. This was to keep the message of Expo'98 alive and, at the same time, increase the country's cultural and educational offer. Thus was born the Oceanário de Lisboa, an aquarium entirely dedicated to the oceans and their conservation. The project was led by architect Peter Chermayeff.

- 2005

Verification of Oceanário de Lisboa's Environmental Management

Oceanário de Lisboa's development strategy is to implement an Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System, certified by SGS, in accordance with international regulations ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). It was the first public aquarium in Europe to obtain these certifications.

- 2011

Inauguration of the Sea Building

The Sea Building has expanded the Oceanário's offer with a new set of services that reinforce the facility's role in promoting knowledge of the oceans. This building has made it possible to increase the Oceanário's exhibition space, with an area dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The project was led by architect Pedro Campos Costa.

- 2015

Concession to the Oceano Azul Foundation

Considering the educational, scientific and cultural purposes of the Oceanário's activity, the Portuguese State classified the activity of operating and managing the equipment as a public service, and awarded the company Oceanário de Lisboa, S.A. the concession for these activities. The Oceano Azul Foundation, the current sole shareholder, has the mission of contributing to a productive and healthy ocean for the benefit of the planet. Under the motto From the Ocean's Point of View, the Oceano Azul Foundation bases its activity on three pillars: 1) Education and Literacy, 2) Conservation and 3) Capacity Building.
