The Mayor of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes, presided over the opening ceremony of the Municipal Swimming Pool - Portugal Building on April 27, less than a year after the contract was signed for the Health Club Portugal, located in the Portugal Building, in the heart of Bairro Novo.

The equipment, which was purchased for 465,000 euros, including all the contents, has since undergone some refurbishment and repair work, largely carried out by municipal employees, to whom Pedro Santana Lopes left a special word of appreciation.

The mayor, who was accompanied by the entire municipal executive, stressed that the pool “is not intended to compete with other gymnastics and fitness facilities in the municipality”. We recall that, at the time the space was acquired, he said that the aim was to give the elderly and young people in the urban area “the chance to have a space closer to them” where they could practice swimming and other aquatic activities.

The mayor reiterated this objective yesterday and said that he hoped the people of Figueiredo would “enjoy and savor” the pool, which he also hopes to use a few times.

The sports facility will be permanently staffed by two lifeguards and two Physical Education teachers, it is equipped with a chair that allows access for people with reduced mobility, a restaurant/cafeteria/bar that has already been concessioned and the opening hours are not yet final, and it may open on Sundays, because according to Pedro Santana Lopes “a pool like this, located in the city center, should be available, especially when people are more free to come here”.

Although he said that “a few things are still missing”, such as the ice tank, the sauna and a larger opening to the outside, so that there is more light, everything is being taken care of and the pool is ready to be used.

On the subject of swimming pools, the mayor of Figueiredo recalled that “over the years, I think it's been around two million euros” and that the municipality will soon be investing almost one million euros in upgrading the Paião pool, which “still doesn't have panels for renewable energy”.

The first to enter the new municipal pool was a group of users of the Municipal Quality of Life Program, who enjoyed a water aerobics class.

The Municipal Swimming Pool - Portugal Building will start operating on April 28th for an initial period, which is expected to last until the end of August. It will be open from Monday to Friday from 09h00 to 21h30 and on Saturdays from 09h00 to 13h00. Access will be through the purchase of free cards. These cards, with 10, 15, 20 and 26 tickets, will allow you to use all the facilities for 75 minutes. Prices range from €20.00 (10 tickets) to €52.00 (26 tickets).

In addition to the pool, the sports facility has group classrooms, a squash court and a spa circuit consisting of a sauna, Turkish bath and jacuzzi, a weight room and a cardio-fitness room.

The weekly activity plan will include aqua aerobics, hydrobike, localized gymnastics, pilates, stretching and indoor cycling classes.
