It's fair to say: watch out homeowners. This is because the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) payable in 2025 is expected to increase by 9.75%, due to the updating of the Taxable Asset Value (VPT) of urban buildings, which is updated every three years and was revised in 2024.

According to Público, the VPT of urban buildings, the reference for calculating IMI, is updated every three years by applying the currency devaluation coefficient corresponding to the year of the last valuation or update. And in the case of residential properties that saw their VPT revised in 2024 (the previous revision took place in 2021), the update dictated a 9.75% increase in the value of the IMI, payable in 2025. This is an increase compared to the previous automatic triennial update (6.75%).

In the case of properties used for services, commerce and industry, last year's update led to an increase of 13%, above the 9% revised in 2023, writes the publication, pointing out that the automatic update - every three years after the date of acquisition - will gradually reach all properties.

The VPT, it should be remembered, is determined according to various factors, such as the construction area, allocation, location, quality and comfort, and years of construction.
