Portugal is one of the countries in the European Union (EU) with the most expensive electricity and this is reflected in everyday life. Keeping a fridge running in a Portuguese home costs 56.2 euros a year, five euros more than the EU average of 51.2 euros.
The calculations come from Eurostat, which gives the example of a three-year-old A++ category combined fridge with an average consumption of 250 kWh per year. Having done the math, there are seven countries (including Portugal) where this cost is higher than the average.
Denmark and Germany are the countries where keeping the fridge running costs the most: 78.2 euros and 73.8 euros respectively per year.
