Figueira da Foz will increase its public housing supply with the construction and renovation of 148 affordable homes. The initiative is the result of an agreement between the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region (CIM RC), and the municipality, with an investment of over €22.4 million, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Union (NextGeneration).
Work is already underway in several areas of the city, including Avenida Dr. Joaquim de Carvalho, where 24 homes are being renovated and 12 more are being built, and Rua de Mortágua, which will have 24 new homes.
Other notable renovation projects include Rua dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra (13 homes), Rua da República (10 homes), and the former Hotel Hispânia, whose conversion into affordable housing is currently in the bidding phase and will provide 22 new residences.
The aim of the project “is to increase the supply of affordable rental housing to support families who would otherwise be unable to access housing on the open market,” as stated in the IHRU press release.
The project is part of the national plan to strengthen public housing in an attempt to address the shortage of housing supply.
