Figueira da Foz Town Hall, in the district of Coimbra, has closed the purchase of a 6.6 hectare plot of land for the construction of a multi-purpose pavilion, said Mayor Pedro Santana Lopes. The mayor announced in a town hall session that the land, located next to the Salmanha viewpoint in the parish of Vila Verde, with views of the city and the River Mondego, represents an investment of 555,000 euros, which involves an exchange of municipal land.
The municipality is giving the owner of the land five plots for houses in Rua António Sérgio, valued at 355,800 euros, and is also paying 219,200 euros, corresponding to the remainder between the two values.
“The idea is to hold a design and build competition, which brings considerable advantages for a facility of this size,” said Santana Lopes, stressing that the site requires a “very beautiful” architectural project.
Santana Lopes stressed that the construction of the future facility does not imply changing the Salmanha viewpoint, which will retain its function.
At the end of the meeting, the mayor confirmed to journalists that the construction of the multipurpose pavilion should cost between 10 and 15 million euros.
The mayor also admitted the possibility of building indoor municipal swimming pools in the future complex, which is currently being estimated.
The municipality's preliminary study predicts that the building will have capacity for more than 3,000 people seated or 12,000 standing.
