Figueira da Foz City Council is joining the European Archaeology Days 2025 by promoting two scientific dissemination initiatives that invite the community to get to know the municipality´s archaeological heritage and the work carried out to safeguard, study and enhance it.

The proposed actions are intended to help bring archaeology professionals and citizens closer together, highlighting the richness of Figueiredo´s past and the relevance of the knowledge produced from recent archaeological interventions.

The first initiative takes place on June 13 (Friday), at 2:30 p.m., with a guided tour of the archaeology room and reserves of the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, led by archaeologists Ana Margarida Ferreira and Marco Penajoia.

The activity offers a privileged look at emblematic pieces, such as the finds from the region´s Megalithic Monuments, the Iron Age, the Phoenician trading post of Santa Olaia and the expeditions of the Archaeological Society led by the museum´s founder and pioneer of national archaeology, António dos Santos Rocha, highlighting the technical work that underpins the museum exhibition.

The following day, June 14 (Saturday), at 4pm, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça, Paião, hosts a public session to present the results of the archaeological excavations carried out as part of the monument´s rehabilitation contract (2022-2023).

With interventions from archaeologists João Abrantes, the intervention´s scientific director, and Liliana Matias de Carvalho, responsible for bioarchaeological studies, the session will showcase the main finds and their importance for understanding the site´s history.

A minibus will be available free of charge for this initiation. Departure is scheduled for Praça da Europa at 3.30pm and return from Seiça at 6pm.

Both activities are free, subject to capacity. The municipality invites the population to take part and make the most of this opportunity for direct contact with the local archaeological heritage, contributing to a greater collective awareness of its preservation.
