FORT OF S. PEDRO DE BUARCOS

Due to the geographical location of the village, it is possible that Buarcos had a maritime fortress since the beginning of the monarchy, to defend the coast against piracy and landings or invasions by sea. The three bastions that still exist today, Baluarte da Conceição, Baluarte de S. Pedro, and Baluarte da Nazaré, are believed to date back to the time of Infante D. Pedro, Duke of Coimbra and Lord of Buarcos (15th century). A fourth bastion, Rosário, now heavily altered, defended the bay to the south.

Access to the village was through two postern gates in the wall, which are still clearly visible today. Currently, the fort symbolically frames the houses it once protected, giving Buarcos an undeniable testimony to its former importance and prestige.

Classified as a property of public interest.
