From August 3 to 5, on BUarcos beach (next to the sports area), Lidl Portugal, the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), the Portuguese Waste Management Association (Amb3e), Quercus, and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) are promoting the “TransforMAR” project.
Together, these entities are raising awareness of the importance of more responsible behavior towards plastic materials and the principles of the circular economy. This initiative is touring the beaches from north to south of the country in a plastic waste collection campaign, transforming the results of the collection into direct benefits for the beaches and the community, preventing their final destination from being the sea.
The aim is to challenge holidaymakers to dispose of their plastic materials and waste, produced while enjoying their time on the beach, in an appropriate manner. This will ensure not only cleaner beaches but also more responsible behavior on the part of holidaymakers.
The container remains on each beach for an average of three days and has the unique feature of reporting the number of items collected every hour, as well as informing the community of the respective weight in kilos each day.
Motivated by the principles of the circular economy and with the aim of ensuring that all plastic waste generated or found on a beach day is deposited in the plasticódromo, this Lidl project ensures that the plastics collected will be transformed into physical activity circuit equipment, delivered to the respective beaches where the collection took place.
The choice of this new destination for plastic is part of the aim to combine healthy lifestyles with responsible choices. In this sense, the “TransforMAR” project will also follow the calendar of the National Beach Volleyball Championship of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation.
This beach initiative also has a component that aims to recognize and distinguish the good behavior of vacationers. Those who demonstrate good environmental conduct, proper sun protection, and appropriate care when exposed to the sun on the beach may be “discovered” by Lidl Portugal scouts and rewarded with discount vouchers for Lidl stores, among other prizes.
