By the end of June, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) plans to award the contract for artificial sand nourishment between the Cova-Gala and Costa de Lavos beaches.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, the president of the APA, Pimenta Machado, said that the work will be carried out between spurs 3 and 5, in sections, and will not affect the next bathing season.
“The work will be carried out in a very restricted area and people have plenty of beach to enjoy,” he said, stressing that this is “the largest artificial beach nourishment project ever carried out in Portugal”.
The intervention in question involves dredging sediment in an area to the north of the Figueira da Foz port´s north breakwater and depositing it on the beaches to the south, which are seriously affected by erosion phenomena.
“A dredger will remove sand from Praia da Claridade and then move to the Cova-Gala area to deposit it on the beach using an articulated mechanical pipe,” explained Pimenta Machado.
This is a 21.1 million euro project that will allow the transfer of 3.3 million cubic meters (m3) of sand to combat coastal erosion over 120 days.
The reduction in the contract´s deadline, which was initially much longer, is due to a procedural and operational issue with the Danish consortium Rohde Nielsen, which was awarded the contract, he said.

According to the APA, the project is funded by the Thematic Program for Climate Action and Sustainability, with a small contribution from the Port of Figueira da Foz and the City Council.
