Are you planning to do some renovations? 3 tips for requesting quotes.

Is it time to renovate your kitchen? Or replace the flooring in your home? The first thing you should do is request a quote from a contractor. Or rather, not just one, but several contractors.

Just as you compare prices and features when you want to buy a mattress or a computer, you should do the same before doing any renovations.

For those who don't have much experience in this area, here are 3 tips that will make your life easier and help you control costs, so that your budget doesn't get out of hand.

1. Compare at least 3 quotes. To do this, request quotes from 5 or 6 contractors, bearing in mind that not all of them may respond. Ask friends for references, but also look for other contacts, particularly online. Look at work done by these contractors and seek opinions on the work carried out.

2. Start by defining exactly what you want to do, so that you can then make it clear to the contractor. Make a list of all the work to be done. This list, also known as specifications, will serve at least three purposes: to ensure that all contractors are quoting for the same work, to be able to compare quotes for tasks, and, in the end, to check that everything has been done and is in line with the initial quote.

3. Look for and see various building materials in person. First, because there is no way to see them with your own eyes, except in a catalog. Second, because you can get an idea of the prices. And when you ask for quotes, you can find out if they are charging you too much for the windows, flooring, or bathtub. Having references and prices in hand will allow you to negotiate with the contractor.
