The damage caused by Storm Leslie in Figueira da Foz is currently estimated at around €32 million. It should be noted that this municipality recorded the strongest winds, reaching speeds of 176 km/h, which left a trail of unprecedented destruction in their wake.
João Ataíde, mayor of Figueira da Foz, said, “There are 552 reports of damage to private homes—with more likely to come—with average damage in the range of 10,000 euros, which means the total damage exceeds 5 million euros.” He advised homeowners and businesses to contact their insurance companies directly. “For those who do not have insurance, we will look at each situation on a case-by-case basis to see if we can get the necessary support for the resumption of all socio-economic activity,” he said.
The mayor also said that "the electricity problems continue, but I hope that today the entire municipality will have electricity supply. A huge effort is being made to replace the PTs with generators, and I hope that today the north of the municipality will be fully powered. There are more complicated problems in the parish of Maiorca with the fall of a high-voltage cable, which has a direct implication on distribution on average."
According to Agência Lusa yesterday, the estimated losses to companies amount to €20 million, not including damage to the paper mill The Navigator Company or the agri-food company Lusiaves.
Approximately €2.5 million is the amount of damage recorded so far to equipment belonging to parish councils, communities, associations, and private social solidarity institutions (IPSS) in the municipality, and €2 million to infrastructure belonging to the PSP, GNR, and Figueira da Foz District Hospital.
The survey includes the vast majority of losses recorded in the public maritime domain under the jurisdiction of the Figueira da Foz Port Authority (totaling between five and six million euros), with the exception of damage to public infrastructure related to port activity, which amounts to 570,000 euros in addition to the more than 32 million indicated by the municipality.
